Indian boxing will have its third federation in four years after Boxing Federation of India (BFI) took birth at the conclusion of elections in Mumbai. Ajay Singh, better known for being instrumental in the revival of Spice jet Airlines as its Chairman takes over as the federation President. In the four years of misrule after the Indian boxing federation was suspended in 2012 for election manipulation and subsequently Boxing India in 2014 was plagued with internal conflicts, a boxing federation in India hopes to be third time lucky. Ajay Singh acknowledges he has to recover a lot of lost ground. “Our past has been chequered and boxing has suffered a lot. But we need to look at the future. This has been an absolutely transparent election process. Things will look up from now and we hope to get formal recognition from AIBA (international boxing body) soon,” he told India Today on being elected. Only after the formal recognition, will India be able to send officials and referees in international meets. Refereeing has been a contentious matter in boxing with the AIBA forced to drop some of its referees in the aftermath of Rio Olympics after allegations of bias. (Also read: Ajay Singh elected BFI President, Jay Kowli back as Secretary General) After Vijender Singh and Mary Kom’s Bronze at 2008 and 2012 Olympics respectively, Indian boxers failed to deliver at Rio amidst administrative apathy. Indian boxing representation at the games also came down from eight in 2012 to three in 2016. With talk of using the best of technologies and practices from around the world, merit based selections, academies, ranking process for boxers, getting in foreign coaches to work with Indian boxers’, the new President is singing the right note. “Indian boxing once was in the top 10. We aim to work towards making India a superpower in boxing,” he said. It sounds a tall order given the politicking in Indian sports federations. But India’s sports fans would hope a proven performer in the private sector may just be able to find a way to swim through troubled waters.advertisement
Nikkin Thimmaiah scored a brace as the Indian men’s hockey team got the better of Malaysia 4-2 to register its first win in the round robin encounter of the 4 Nations Invitational tournament here on Thursday. In a closely-fought contest, India scored two goals in the final quarter of the match to earn their first points at the tournament.India got off to a dominating start in the opening periods of the game, pressing high and consistently effecting turnovers to keep Malaysia in their own half. However, despite the overwhelming possession, there weren’t many clear chances created as Malaysia’s deep defense held firm and the two teams went into the first break locked in a stalemate. In the second quarter also the Indians dominated in the midfield but were unable to find a breakthrough in the final third. This lasted till the 24th minute of the match before Sardara Singh capitalised on a Malaysian mistake to launch an attack. His pass found Satbir Singh, who laid it off to Thimmaiah at the edge of the circle. (Rupinder Pal Singh’s double in vain as India lose to Australia 2-3)Nikkin dummied the defender and cut into the circle, before unleashing a shot into the bottom corner to give India a 1-0 lead, which they held on to as the match went into halftime.Nine minutes into the third quarter, Malaysia hit back with an equaliser with Faizal Saari converting a penalty corner. The parity didn’t last long though, as India won their first PC almost from the restart. From the PC, Rupinder Pal Singh made no mistake and once again gave India the lead. The teams went into the final break with India leading 2-1.advertisementMalaysia had a flurry of PCs in the opening minutes of the final quarter. Shahril Saabah converted the second to draw level again, setting the stage for an exciting finish. The equaliser from Malaysia served as a blessing in disguise for India as they stepped up their game and started being more assertive with their possession, making more penetrations into the Malaysian circle. The dominance paid off in the 55th minute with Nikkin scoring his second goal of the game. India stepped up a gear and within a minute as Akashdeep Singh scored the fourth goal for India.India will next play New Zealand on Saturday.
When the U.S. national team took the unusual step of announcing it’s roster for the October friendlies a week earlier than usual, it provided an exciting glimpse of the future. Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams were all on the list and the trio regarded as the midfield of the future was going to get its chance to play together for just the second time ever.Injuries spoiled that scenario completely, with all three young midfielders suffering knocks with their clubs and forced to withdraw from the U.S. squad set to face Colombia and Mexico. It’s a scenario that has left interim U.S. coach Dave Sarachan with a midfield to rebuild, but with plenty of options to turn to.Enter Michael Bradley, the polarizing former U.S. captain who had spent almost a year away from the team after the USMNT’s failure to qualify for the World Cup. When he was first named to the squad, Bradley probably wasn’t expected to come in and start, but now given the circumstances you have to think the Toronto FC standout will slide right back into the U.S. starting lineup to help lead a squad that will be very young even if both he and Brad Guzan get starting nods. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Man Utd ready to spend big on Sancho and Haaland in January Who is Marcus Thuram? Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! Given Colombia’s stature as the tougher of the two opponents the Americans are set to face — not that Peru will be a cakewalk next week — it is a safe bet we see an older overall lineup on Thursday in Tampa than we see a week later against the Peruvians.WIth that in mind, here’s a look at the lineup Sarachan could turn to against Colombia:GOALKEEPERZack Steffen has done an excellent job since settling into the starting role earlier this year, but Guzan has been brought in to push him for that starting job and should be in the lineup for one of the two friendlies.DEFENDERSJohn Brooks is back and should return to the starting lineup given his excellent form in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg. Sarachan should partner Brooks with Matt Miazga once again after their solid showing together in the loss against Brazil. At fullback, DeAndre Yedlin should slide right into his usual starting role while Antonee Robinson earns another start at left back. FC Dallas right back Reggie Cannon is a player who merits a look, but it’s tough to see him starting in the first match of his first camp. The same can be said for Ben Sweat, even though he’s an older player than Cannon.MIDFIELDERSThe absences of Pulisic, McKennie and Adams are a big blow for these particular friendlies, but Sarachan has a few different ways he can go in building his midfield. A logical approach would be to give Julian Green a starting nod in an attacking midfielder role. There isn’t much established depth behind Pulisic in the USMNT attacking midfielder depth chart, and Green has settled into that role for his club team and looked good in that role coming off the bench in the September win against Mexico. Will Sarachan give someone like Kellyn Acosta a look next to Wil Trapp in the center of the midfield, or will he give Bradley a chance to step right back into the starting lineup and form what could be a solid combination with Trapp? Sarachan could choose to start Acosta centrally, and deploy Green on the wing, but it doesn’t seem too likely that Sarachan starts out that way.On the wings, Kenny Saief is an intriguing option who should get some serious playing time in the upcoming friendlies. He can play on the wing, or as an attacking midfielder and could wind up being preferred to Green in that role. Tim Weah has struggled for playing time at Paris Saint Germain, but he should get another look in the starting lineup in at least one of the upcoming friendlies. One winger to keep tabs of is Jonathan Amon, a speedy wide player with a real penchant for taking on, and beating, opposing defenders. This is his first national team camp though, so a start against Colombia is probably a bit too ambitious, though he does have the talent to become a special player for the USMNT.FORWARDSFresh off a two-goal performance for Bundesliga side Hannover, Bobby Wood comes into camp with some real confidence and, as much as plenty of fans would love to see Josh Sargent or Andrija Novakovich get a look, Wood should be the starter against Colombia.Novakovich has made a strong case for deserving more national team minutes given his run of form with Dutch side Fortuna Sittard, so look for him to see time in both October friendlies, even if he may have to wait a bit longer to earn a start.Sargent is a very intriguing option given how well he is playing for Werder Bremen’s U-23 team. He’s turning heads and moving closer to a first-team debut, but his goal-scoring success with the Bremen U-23s should have him in a very confident mood in what is just his second USMNT camp.4-2-3-1 (Most likely XI)A 4-2-3-1 makes the most sense given the personnel available and the opponent. The USMNT will need the extra bodies in midfield to try and cope with Colombia’s skilled attackers. We should be able to see more of a 4-4-2 later in the match. Getting Novakovich and Sargent on the field should be a priority, even if they don’t start. How effective will Bradley be? Trapp is a good partner for him in central midfield given how disciplined he is positionally. He also excels at putting himself in good spots to receive passes and circulating the ball.A Trapp-Acosta central tandem would also be interesting to watch. Acosta is playing for an awful Colorado Rapids team, but he has actually gained confidence and improved his form since being traded away by FC Dallas. Hopefully for Acosta’s sake, Sarachan doesn’t deploy him on the wing again.
Juanfran is still hoping to earn a Spain recall despite not playing for the national team for the last two years. The Atletico Madrid defender, a European champion in 2012, started all four of Spain’s games at Euro 2016 but has not featured for them since.Spain coach Luis Enrique has not named Juanfran in either of his squads to date, with Wolves defender Jonny Castro Otto called up for his month’s matches with Wales and England in the absences of Dani Carvajal and Sergi Roberto. Paul Pogba will return for Manchester United for Sunday’s home game against Crystal Palace after missing the last two matches due to the death of his father, manager Jose Mourinho said on Friday. The Portuguese is focusing on next Wednesday’s Europa League final against Dutch side Ajax and is set to field a youthful team for the largely meaningless final game of the Premier League season. With United sixth in the domestic league and unable to finish in the top four, the Europa League is Mourinho’s only hope of securing Champions League football next season. But he told reporters that midfielder Pogba, the world’s most expensive player, would feature at Old Trafford.”Paul Pogba is fine. Strong guy. Strong mentality. He needs to play on Sunday because he has not trained or played for a while,” Mourinho said after the Frenchman joined the players at an open training session. The manager said he did not know whether England striker Wayne Rooney would feature.Chris Smalling would be absent, and missed training on Friday, but is expected to be fit for Wednesday while Marouane Fellaini was “a question mark” with United waiting on a scan after he suffered a hamstring injury.”Tim Fosu-Mensah plays Sunday and if the reaction is good and if he manages to play the game without problems, then he’s an option for us for the final,” said Mourinho.

New Delhi, Jun 15 (PTI) It is turning out to be bonanza time for consumers as companies, ranging from apparels to car manufacturers, woo them with attractive discounts ahead of implementation of the GST next month. While apparel manufacturers are trying to liquidate old stock ahead of the new tax regime, automobile companies are attempting to draw buyers to showrooms with attractive limited period discounts of up to Rs 2.5 lakh across a range of vehicles sold in the country. Brands such as Levis, Reebok and Woodland are currently on a clearance mode offering high discounts. “The retailers do not want to keep much of stock because the remaining stock will move to the GST regime and the margins would then vary. No brand can sell the entire stock before July 1 but they are trying to do the maximum,” Woodland Worldwide MD Harkirat Singh told PTI.He said the GST has come just ahead of the usual seasonal discount and the brands have slightly advanced their offers. Woodland is currently offering up to 40 per cent discount on maximum of its items. On select items the discount is even more. An employee at an exclusive store of Levis here at the Capital said the company sent instructions to “clear old stock by offering these discounts as soon as possible because of the GST”.Levis is offering buy-two get-two scheme on most of its items. Similarly, footwear majors Reebok and Bata are also offering up to 50 per cent discount. Future group multibrand retail format Centrals Chief of Marketing & Head of Customer Loyalty Jitendranath Patri said discounts have also been offered keeping in mind Ramzan shopping.advertisementThe GST Council has decided to tax man-made apparel up to Rs 1,000 at 5 per cent, while those costing above Rs 1,000, will attract 12 per cent. On the automobiles front, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda, Nissan, Mahindra and Mahindra and Ford India have all come out with different schemes that are valid for June only. Under the GST rates, cars will attract the top rate of 28 per cent with a cess in the range of 1-15 per cent on top of it. While small petrol cars with engine less than 1,200 cc will attract 1 per cent cess, that with a diesel engine of less than 1,500 cc will attract 3 per cent cess. The gloves are off and the fight is on between Formula One title rivals Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.Sunday’s explosive Azerbaijan Grand Prix more than made up for last year’s dull race in Baku, bursting the budding ‘bromance’ and replacing it with something much more heavyweight. (Formula 1: Daniel Ricciardo wins chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix)Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said as much after a crazy afternoon that saw mutual respect and camaraderie tossed aside amid angry accusations.”Nobody wanted to see the schmoozing anyway, so now the gloves are off,” the Austrian told Sky Sports television after Hamilton had dubbed the Ferrari driver a “disgrace” and suggested they sort things out “face to face”. (Azerbaijan GP: Record-breaker Lance Stroll realises Formula One dream)”The sport needs the rivalry. What we have seen today is the ingredient of a great championship,” said Wolff. The most memorable seasons have been fuelled by controversy, passion and a fierce rivalry sometimes spilling into outright enmity.Baku, with the championship favourites colliding and a podium of drivers who could scarcely believe their luck, provided enough drama to keep the championship bubbling away for months to come.In Spain last May, Hamilton had spoken about how enjoyable it was to be battling a rival who was not a team mate — his main opponent for the past three seasons — and the admiration he felt for Vettel’s speed and consistency. The Briton had warned then, however, that it might not last and on Sunday he was proven right.advertisementBATTLE LINESThe battle lines were drawn the moment Vettel went into the back of Hamilton’s Mercedes during the second of three safety car periods, the German shaking his fists and pulling alongside to bang wheels in a gesture that looked a lot like ‘road rage’.The frustrated and angry man of 2016, who raged at rivals and had to apologise to race director Charlie Whiting in Mexico last November after an expletive-laden radio rant, was back. The stewards were clear in apportioning blame, imposing a 10 second stop-and-go penalty on the German for steering into Hamilton. The championship leader, now 14 points clear of Hamilton after finishing fourth to the Briton’s fifth, was also given three penalty points which could prove significant. They bring Vettel’s tally in the last 12 months to nine and means another such sanction in Austria in two weeks’ time would trigger an automatic race ban for the following round at Silverstone. There were some who felt such a penalty should have been applied already, even if the moment of madness ultimately cost Vettel a victory that would have fallen into his lap after Hamilton had to pit to fix a loose head rest.”Deliberately driving into another driver and getting away pretty much scot-free as he still came fourth, I think that’s a disgrace. I think he disgraced himself today,” said triple champion Hamilton.”Imagine all the young kids that are watching Formula One today and see that kind of behaviour from a four-time world champion. I think that says it all.”Vettel’s assertion that Hamilton had ‘brake-tested’ him, by slowing so suddenly that the Ferrari ran into the back of the Mercedes, was also undermined by the evidence. The governing FIA confirmed that Hamilton’s car data showed he “maintained a consistent speed and behaved in the same manner on that occasion as in all the other re-starts during the race”.Mercedes non-executive director and retired triple champion Niki Lauda said he had never seen anything like it.”Vettel is a decent guy normally. This I don’t understand. He is crazy. Lewis will hit him one day. Not with the car but with his fist,” he said.

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo wants the club’s fans to avoid turning Saturday’s game with Barcelona into a political demonstration following weeks of rising tensions between the Spanish government and Catalonia.Catalan club Barcelona visit the Spanish capital for the first time since a banned vote on independence from Spain took place in Catalonia on Oct. 1.Barcelona decided that day to play their game with Las Palmas at the Nou Camp behind closed doors to show opposition to police violence against voters, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said at the time. The Frente Atletico (Atletico Front) supporters’ group have called for a mass display of Spain flags in the Wanda Metropolitano stadium for the visit of Barcelona.Yet the game has not been classified as a high-risk event by the Spanish football federation as no Barcelona fans will be present due to a disagreement between the two clubs over a ticket allocation.”I want the game to be played with the same sporting spirit as always against Barcelona, Saturday’s game is not a political demonstration, it’s a game of football,” Cerezo said in an interview with radio station Onda Cero on Friday.”Atletico won the league in the Nou Camp (in 2014) and the whole stadium applauded us, we can’t forget that.”Barcelona are the only team that Diego Simeone has been unable to beat in La Liga since he took over Atletico in 2011 and transformed the club’s fortunes. He has failed to win in 11 league encounters between the teams, although his side have twice eliminated the Catalans in the Champions League.advertisement”They’ve always scored one goal more than us, they’ve been decisive in the key moments and they are a very good team,” Simeone told a news conference ahead of the game.”We have been stronger in the Champions League and I hope tomorrow we can overcome this obstacle.”Barcelona have a 100 percent record in the league and in Europe this season and lead the standings by five points over nearest challengers Sevilla. They are six points clear of Atletico in fourth.”They are one of the best teams in the world, right now I’d say Real Madrid are slightly better, but they have reinvented themselves very quickly after the departure of Neymar and their players never tire of winning,” added the Argentine coach.Simeone, however, was unapologetic about the state of the pitch at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, with Spanish media questioning the length of the grass. The pitch has been a topic of debate in the month since the ground opened and in the lead up to Saturday’s match, with Barcelona’s passing game thriving off a slick playing surface.”I’m not a groundsman, I’m a coach, but if you invite me to your house I use your plates and if you come to my place you use my things,” Simeone said.
He has made rapid strides in limited overs cricket over the past couple of months but for Kuldeep Yadav, the ultimate challenge is to bowl long spells consistently in the Test format. The 22-year-old from Kanpur, alongside another youngster Yuzvendra Chahal, have shouldered the Indian spin attack in back to back limited overs series against Sri Lanka and Australia not letting the team feel the absence of seasoned pros like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. However Test cricket remains his priority – a format which brought him into the limelight after a successful Test debut against Australia in Dharamsala, last March.”The last six months have been great and I have got plenty of chances to play for India. When you are starting off, you want to play each and every game for Indiairrespective of format. But in the longer run, I would love to win as many Test matches as possible for my country,” Yadav told PTI during an interaction ahead of the limited overs New Zealand beginning on October 22.Spin great Bishen Bedi had recently said he would like judge Yadav after he has done the hard yards in Test cricket. Yadav accepted legendary spinner’s view point with utmost humility.”He has been a great of the game and I understand where he is coming from. Bowling long spells in first-class cricket is something I have always looked forward to. There is no better feeling for a spinner than getting a batsman out after setting him up. That sort of planning is only possible in the longest format,” Yadav said.advertisementYadav’s strength has been his accuracy, which is fairly tough for a chinaman to maintain. However, it has not always been smooth sailing for him, having being hammered on a couple of occasions in the just concluded series against Sri Lanka. He went for 75 runs in 10 overs in the game after he became the third Indian to take a hat-trick in ODIs in Kolkata. And during the T20s series against Australia, he was taken to the cleaners by Moises Henriques and Travis Head leaking 46 runs in four overs.”It just goes to show that every day is a new day in international cricket. Having said that, getting a hat-trick was like a dream. I never thought I could do that so early in my career,” he sounded satisfied.Yadav loves bowling to the left-handers and two of his victims at the Eden Gardens were southpaws Ashton Agar and Matthew Wade before he had right-hander Pat Cummins caught behind with the wrong one to complete his hat-trick.”I think I am more effective against the left-handers but I did enjoy getting Cummins out that day. I went for the wrong one and it worked.”Someone who has seen Yadav from close quarters is Australian Brad Hogg, who himself has praised the younger chinaman. Yadav too can’t help raving about Hogg.”He has helped me a lot (during the KKR days) and he continues to do so. Even in the Australia series, where he was commentating, he always made time for me. I don’t think my wrist position is as immaculate as Hogg’s. I am still learning the tricks of the trade,” said Yadav, adding there is still a long way to go before he can be as effective as Hogg.

Mumbai, Jan 11 (PTI) Recently crowned Asian champion Gopi Thonakal and fellow Army long distance runner Nitendra Singh Rawat, the course record holder among Indians, are the star attractions among the home countrys male runners in the Tata Mumbai Marathon to be held on January 21.Gopi, from Army Sports Institute of Pune, will go into the gruelling run on Mumbais streets in the 15th edition of the marathon with his confidence high after becoming the first-ever male runner from the country to clinch the Asian marathon title in Dongguan in China on November 26, clocking 2 hours, 15 minutes and 48 seconds.Rawat, from the Kumaon Regiment, is expected to give him a run for his money after his feat as the best Indian finisher in the Delhi half marathon, and his performance as the top Indian finisher here in 2016.Both had also taken part in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games with Gopi ending up a creditable 25th in 2 hours, 15 minutes and 25 seconds while a hamstring injury affected Rawats performance as he finished a distant 84th.The 29-year-old Gopi from Wayanad in Kerala had finished 28th in the World Championship last year in London, clocking 2:17:13.Their head-to-head rivalry, similar to what was experienced in 2016 when Rawat was the top Indian finisher in 2:25:48 just ahead of Gopi, is expected to be among the highlights of the USD 405,000 event to be title-sponsored by the Tata Group for the first time.”We are happy to be the title sponsors of the Mumbai Marathon as its the first big event for us in 2018 which marks 150 years of the Tata Group,” said Harish Bhat, Brand Custodian of the Groups flagship, Tata Sons, at a media conference here today.advertisementGuangzhou Asian Games (2010) steeplechase gold medal winner Sudha Singh is the top draw among the Indian women. She will have to contend with the challenge from L Suriya, the fastest Indian woman and course record holder of the Airtel Delhi half marathon and Tata Steel Kolkata 25K events, among others.South Africas Olympian Hendrick Ramaala, the 2004 mens winner, has been roped in as the pacemaker of the Indian contingent. The elite list of foreign runners has already been announced by event promoters, Procam International. The mens elite field has 2017 Tokyo Marathon runner-up Solomon Deksisa of Ethiopia and last years Mumbai Marathon runner-up Joshua Kipkorir, among others. The corresponding womens field will see last years winner Bornes Kitur of Kenya defending her title. The start and finish route of the race is expected to see a small change because of the under-construction work for the Mumbai Metro on the D N Road stretch from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Hutatma Chowk (Flora Fountain), informed Joint MD of Procam, Vivek Singh.”We are working with the government authorities on how best to tweak the route at the start and finish of the race,” said Singh to a question. Virat Kohli said India do not need to panic as they gear up to face South Africa in the second Test of the three-match series in Centurion from Saturday.India were blown away by South Africa’s pacers in the opening Test at Newlands. Chasing 208 for a rare victory in South Africa, the famed Indian batting line-up imploded as Vernon Philander picked up six wickets to win the man-of-the-match award. It’s funny how things change in a matter of weeks, or just about five days. Before the first Test, no one thought that he should be in the XI, and now suddenly people are looking at the other option. For us as a team, it’s all about finding the right balance. If players fit in in the kind of balance we want to go with as a side, then they will fit in. We certainly don’t go on opinions that are created outside, and ‘talk of the town’, and all those sort of things.Kohli went onto add that Rahane is a quality player and his inclusion in the XI will be decided before the game after the team is done with practice.”He’s a quality player, he’s done well in South Africa. [In] all conditions, actually, away from home,” Kohli said of Rahane. “He’s probably been our most consistent and solid player away from home. I explained the reasons why Rohit [Sharma] started ahead of him. I’m not saying that Ajinkya cannot or will not start in this game. Possibilities are all open at the moment and we shall decide after practice.”However, Kohli said India are better prepared after the reality check in Cape Town and even suggested he was open to a differenet opening combination after Shikhar Dhawan’s twin failures. The Delhi southpaw got out to poor shots in both innings and India might be tempted to give KL Rahul a chance in Centurion.advertisement”As far as the opening combination is concerned, we are going to decide in the practice session, what we are going to go with in this game,” Kohli said and added India might even go in with a different opening combination.WATCH”Having said that, there is definitely no need to panic as a batting unit because of collapses. Whether we play five batsmen or six, the batsmen have to apply themselves better. One needs to have a solid technique and face bowling spells. We need to embrace that,” he added.Kohli said his batsmen were now more ready to handle the bounce. The India captain appeared calm on the eve of an important Test and said his batsmen did not need to be surprised by the bounce of the South African pitches – that is what they expected coming here.”One must not get surprised by the bounce in South Africa. Here the bounce can be steep. One has to keep their composure. The first game gave us exposure to that. We are now better prepared to handle the conditions,” he said. Ajinkya Rahane during training session (BCCI Photo)Kohli also dismissed criticism the team management copped for dropping Ajinkya Rahane for the first Test. The Indian vice-captain had a poor series against Sri Lanka at home and Rohit Sharma was preferred in Newlands.Rohit flopped in both the innings and Rahane’s absence was felt. The latter has a better average away than at home and several experts wondered if it was a good idea to leave him out.”It is funny,” said Kohli. “Before the last Test, everyone was saying Ajinkya Rahane should not be included in the playing XI. Now, in one week, that has changed. Everyone is saying he should be. We don’t decide playing XI as per outside opinion.”ALSO WATCH:
ATHENS — Striker Kostas Mitroglou has been named in Greece’s preliminary World Cup squad despite his troubled move to relegated Premier League side Fulham, while injured-plagued defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos was not included.Greece’s football association released the names of the 30-player squad, and is due to announce the final 23-man squad on May 19.The 26-year-old Mitroglou sent Greece to the finals in Brazil, scoring three goals for a 4-2 aggregate win over Romania in the playoffs. But he has struggled since his move to London in January, playing in just three matches and scoring no goals due to a knee injury and being dropped from the starting lineup by coach Felix Magath.Fulham teammate and veteran of the 2004 winning European Championship squad, Giorgos Karagounis, stays on as captain.Greece faces Colombia, Japan and Ivory Coast in Group C at its second sconsecutive World Cup.Coach Fernando Santos also called up two players from Panathinaikos, which recovered from a spell of poor form to win the Greek Cup, naming goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino and forward Nikos Karelis. The Portuguese coach was forced to leave out Schalke defender Papadopoulos, who missed most of the season at the Bundesliga club through injury. The Greek FA had said it would not make the preliminary list public, but then released the names following reports of the lineup in the news media.TweetPinShare0 Shares
NEW YORK – The New York Knicks hired Derek Fisher as their new coach on June 10, with Phil Jackson turning to one of his most trustworthy former players.Just days after finishing his 18th season, Fisher was chosen to replace Mike Woodson, who Jackson fired after the regular season in his first major move as team President.Fisher won five championships playing for Jackson with the Los Angeles Lakers and was known for his knack for hitting clutch postseason shots while playing an NBA-record 259 playoff games. Jackson says “it has come clear to me” that he and Fisher can form a great partnership again, listing some of the coaches the 39-year-old Fisher played under — though leaving out himself.“Derek has a long, laundry list of coaches that he’s worked under and had a tremendous amount of success and we welcome him,” Jackson said during a news conference at the Knicks’ training center in Greenburgh, New York. The Knicks went 37-45 and missed the playoffs, just a year after winning the Atlantic Division and advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals. Jackson, who declined an original offer to coach the team, was instead hired to run the front office in March, and fired Woodson the week after the season ended. He was seeking someone familiar with the triangle offense and someone with little or no coaching experience that he could teach. The Knicks nearly closed a deal to hire Steve Kerr, who instead left a TV commentating job to coach the Golden State Warriors.Jackson turned his attention to Fisher, even getting fined $25,000 last week when he was too open about his interest in the point guard who was still under contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The 39-year-old Fisher was respected among players around the league as he was the President of the players association during the 2011 lockout. The Knicks have had nowhere near the success of Fisher or Jackson, but their new coach believes they can. “We know without a doubt that we can re-establish what that means, what that is,” Fisher said.(BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shares
