DONEGAL KARATE KIDS SCOOP MEDAL HAUL AT EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

first_imgTwelve young karate stars from Donegal were celebrating success this week after they returned from the prestigious European Karate Championships in Liége, Belgium, with an impressive haul of nine medals.The youngsters were in Belgium to represent the Ulster Karate Federation (UKF) made up of karate clubs from Burnfoot, Quigleys Point and Culmore in Derry.Their coaches were delighted with the success and there was further joy for Donegal when Sloan O’Donnell of Killygordon Karate Club also picked up a medal. The UKF squad had been preparing for the event for five months as it is one of the biggest competitions of its kind. More than 1,300 competitors from across Europe come together to compete over four days.“We’re absolutely delighted with the success that saw Cién McColgan and Joseph Feeney pick up two Gold for Kumite, while we also came away with one Silver and one Bronze for Team Kumite together with three silver and one bronze for Kata,” coach Shawn Barron said.He added: “The results from the competition leave the UKF squad ranked sixteenth out of 31 European Federations and leaves Ireland in overall 10th place out of 23 countries.” Coach Martin McCole who explained that competitors in Belgium ranged in age from 8-15 years, insisted that the medals tally was just reward for the young Donegal karate kids.“The results we achieved is testament to the hard work that each individual competitor put into their training and even the squad members who weren’t individual medal winners this time, have played a huge role in the overall success,” he said.He added that there was no time for them to rest on their laurels either as they turn their attention now towards preparation for the WUKF World Karate Championships which will be held for the first time in Dublin in 2016.“We are absolutely thrilled with this success but we will be hoping to build on it next year and we are always keen to have more youngsters get involved. If anyone is interested in joining the clubs they can come along on Wednesdays to Aileach Club in Burnfoot at 7pm, to Hollybush School in Culmore on Tuesdays at 7pm or to Quigleys Point Community Centre on Thursdays at 7pm.”Meanwhile UKF President Columba McLaughlin who highlighted that the squad compete in competitions in Ireland and the UK on a regular basis, said they would welcome sponsorship.“We really would be grateful for any sponsorship from local businesses to help us continue with the work we do within the clubs in the area and to continue the development of the young people within these communities. Anyone who would like to support us in any way can find us on Facebook – Ulster Karate Federation or on the website http://www.ukf-karate.com” Mr McLaughlin concluded by congratulating all the members who had travelled for Belgium for the tournament and especially those who had brought home medals.The UKF medal winners were: Cién McColgan 1 gold, 1 silver; Dara Gill 1 silver; Conor Doherty 1 silver; Caolan McColgan 1 Silver; Joseph Feeney 1 Gold; Shauna McGlinchey 1 bronze; Erin McCole 1 bronze.
