England high-fliers target Euro glory

first_img The new Amateur Champion, Harry Ellis, is included in an England line-up of high-fliers for the European men’s team championship in Austria next month. He’ll be joined by his immediate predecessor, 2016 Amateur Champion Scott Gregory, French amateur champion Josh Hilleard, St Andrews Links Trophy winner Matthew Jordan, Welsh open champion Gian-Marco Petrozzi and 2016 Lytham Trophy winner Alfie Plant. The championship will be played at Diamond Country Club from 11-15 July 2017. England have been European champions 11 times, most recently in 2013. The players: Harry Ellis, 21, (Meon Valley, Hampshire) won The Amateur at the weekend on the 38th hole, having been four down with five to play. Scott Gregory, 22, (Corhampton, Hampshire) was the 2016 Amateur champion and has since played in the Open, The Masters and the US Open. He is also the New South Wales champion. Josh Hilleard, 22, (Farrington Park, Somerset), won the French Open in a play-off and tied fourth in the Irish men’s open. Last season he had four wins in 22 days and was third in the English men’s order of merit. Matthew Jordan, 21, (Royal Liverpool, Cheshire) won the St Andrews Links Trophy having been runner-up in the Scottish open, tied fourth in the Irish open, fifth in the Brabazon Trophy and seventh in the Lytham Trophy. Gian-Marco Petrozzi, 20, (Trentham, Staffordshire) enjoyed a wire-to-wire win in the Welsh open, finishing nine shots clear of the field. He was fourth in the Portuguese amateur and eighth in the St Andrews Links Trophy. The win was Binghamton’s first of the postseason to come in regulation.
