Post to Post for April 9 Guineas classics

first_imgThe season’s first classics, the 1000 and 2000 Guineas for native-bred three-year-old fillies and colts, respectively, will be run over a mile at Caymanas Park on Saturday, April 9 and for the second consecutive year Post to Post Betting are title sponsors.Plans for the 42nd annual Guineas Day were outlined by representatives of the sponsors and Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) at yesterday’s launch on the front lawns of Caymanas Park. Each race offers a purse of $3.25 million.According to Mikey Bell, sports betting manager, Post to Post Betting (P2P), the company has donated $4 million towards the day’s activities, including $1 million towards the purses of each Guineas, another million to support the remaining races on the card and a further million to promote the race.CTL’s racing secretary Denzil Miller Jr., said the two races, which represent the first legs of the Triple Crown series, are eagerly anticipated by racing fans.”They provide a real test for the three-year-olds for the Jamaica Derby two months later and is part of $17 million in total purses for the Triple Crown series this year,” noted Miller. He added that both races should be keenly contested, with last Saturday’s impressive Thornbird Stakes winner, the obvious ante-post favourite for the 1000 Guineas in whichothers such as SORRENTINO’S STAR, SIMPLY THE BEST, BIRD CATCHER, BUBBLING KITTEN and CLASSY AVIATOR should carry the fight to the Gary Subratie-trained filly. In the 2000 Guineas, Miller singled out CHACE THE GREAT, winner of last Saturday’s Prince Consort Stakes, along with the runner-up ORPEHUS. But he disclosed that ante-post favourite, FUTURE KING, winner of the $4.2 million Supreme Ventures Jamaica 2-Y-O Stakes over a mile last Boxing Day, is a doubtful starter.”The Wayne DaCosta-trained colt was a late scratch from the overnight allowance race last Saturday owing to a foot injury and it will be a race against time for him to recover. But as we all know, the welfare of the horse comes first and we are hoping for the best,” added the racing secretary.REACH AND ENGAGEBell said: “From our involvement last year we noted that this calendar event attracts a mixture of horse racing and sports enthusiasts, affording P2P the opportunity to reach and engage a wider cross-section of target groups with our growing product offerings, as we continue to deliver our promises that customers always ‘Get the most with Post to Post’,” he said.”Trading as P2P Betting & Gaming Entertainment, our mainstay remains primarily wagering in horse racing. Following the 2015 rebranding exercise, our horse racing product P2P AnyHorse is the lead brand in the sponsorship. And P2P AnyBet engages customers in a variety of international sports,” he added. Also speaking was Cedric Stewart, CEO of Caymanas Track Limited, while among those present were executives of Post to Post Betting, including the CEO, Sandra Donaldson, operations manager Carl Gowdie and board chairman Amber Stewart.last_img read more

Honouring Mandela around the world

first_img4 July 2013 It’s not only South Africa that has a penchant for naming things after Nelson Mandela – there are numerous streets, bridges, educational institutions, buildings, organisms, flowers, statues and monuments around the world that bear his name. With the help of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, we bring you a far from exhaustive list of some of the places where Mandela’s name can be found. In South Africa citizens are used to driving down Nelson Mandela Boulevard in Tshwane, wandering through Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, crossing the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg, attending the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, living in the Nelson Mandela residential hall at Rhodes University, visiting the Nelson Mandela Museum in the Eastern Cape, trekking the Madiba heritage trail in the Eastern Cape, or holidaying at the swanky Mandela Rhodes Place in Cape Town. But in Purmerend, Zoetermeer and Arnhem, all in the Netherlands, residents there have their own Mandela Bridges, as do the people of Utrecht, Belgium.A road by any other name And just as Bloemfontein residents have their Nelson Mandela Drive, so do the people of Castries, St Lucia, in the Caribbean. In Paris, France, pedestrians can stroll along the Avenue du President Nelson Mandela in Arcueil, located in the city’s southern suburbs, while there is a Nelson Mandela Boulevard in Caracas, Venezuela. Dakar in Senegal boasts the Avenue Nelson Mandela, and there are more Mandela Avenues in Glamorgan, Harlow and Falkirk, UK; Georgetown, Guyana; and Schrijndel, Netherlands, as well as a Mandela Road in Culemborg, Netherlands, and Uyo, Nigeria. The UK has several versions of Mandela Close and Mandela Way respectively, and there is a Mandela Highway leading into Kingston, Jamaica. Not to be outdone, the authorities in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, have established the grandly-designated Nelson Mandela Highway Road, and there are Mandela roads, places, paths, parkways, interchanges, links, courts and streets all around the world. In Italy, there is a municipality or comune named Mandela, situated in the province of Rome, about 40km northeast of the Italian capital. A few cities have named stadiums after Mandela – besides the Nelson Mandela Multipurpose Stadium in Port Elizabeth, there’s one in Port Louis, Mauritius; in Kampala, Uganda; and in Torrevieja, Spain.Following in his footsteps For those who want to do their own long walk while remembering the elder statesman, the Madiba hiking trail in the Eastern Cape passes through his home town of Qunu. The Mandela Garden in Leeds, UK, as well as the Nelson Mandela ornamental garden in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire, UK, the Nelson Mandela Park in Montreal, Canada, and Mandela Park in Hoorn, Netherlands, offer a chance for peaceful contemplation. You can even wine and dine in his presence by proxy, at the Cafe Mandela in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Mandela Bar at Bristol University, or Madiba Restaurant in New York, which has served up peace and love since 1999. Mandela’s former wife Winnie has not been left out – in 1983, the New York City square in front of South Africa’s UN mission became the Nelson and Winnie Mandela Plaza. Port Louis, Mauritius; New Delhi, India; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; The Hague, Netherlands; Tunis, Tunisia – it seems unlikely that any other world icon has so many tributes in so many places.Education in Mandela’s name Mandela’s passionate belief in education is reflected in a long list of schools, scholarships, programmes, awards, libraries, centres, chairs, bursaries and funds – not just in South Africa or even the continent, but far beyond. A few of them are the Ecole Nelson Mandela, in Bamako, Mali, the Mandela Children’s Learning School in Compton, US, and the Mandela Institute for Human Rights in the Palestinian National Authority Area, Jerusalem, Israel. Students at the Nelson Mandela Educational Centre in A Lama, Spain, the Nelson Mandela State International School in Berlin, Germany, the Mandela Supplementary School in London, UK, and the Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution in New Delhi, India, study under the gaze of one of the world’s most ardent champions for the education of youth. The Australian High Commission in South Africa awards 20 Australia Mandela scholarships annually, given to academic staff who wish to study for their masters’ degrees at Australian institutions. At the University of Michigan, the Dubois-Mandela-Rodney postdoctoral fellowship is given to scholars studying Africa or the African diaspora. A Mandela scholarship fund administered by Leiden University in the Netherlands offers African postgraduate students the chance to study for a year at the university. The Mandela Rhodes Foundation supports the development of leadership capacity in Africa.Building on the legacy Needless to say, Mandela himself has been the recipient of numerous awards, honorary degrees, life memberships, civic honours, freedoms of towns and cities, and various other accolades. According to the Mandela Centre of Memory, the statesman has collected more than 1 100 of these honours over the years. They include the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, which he won jointly with then-president FW de Klerk, and an honorary doctorate in liberal arts from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, in 1997. He can also add the Civil Order of the First Class from the Sultanate of Oman (1999), the Order of the Lion of Malawi (2001), the freedom of the city and county of Cardiff, Wales (1998), and honorary citizenship of Canada (2001) – the first time in history that the honour was given to a living person – to his list, as well as hundreds more. There are a host of living creatures, organisms and plants named after the former president, such as Protea cynaroides Mandela, which was revealed in 1988 as an 80th birthday present; Triacanthella madiba, a species of springtail named by scientists at Stellenbosch University; Australopicus nelsonmandelai, an extinct species of woodpecker named in 2012; an indigenous species of African orb- weaver spider named Singafrotypa Mandela in 2002; the Paravanda Nelson Mandela orchid, named in 1997; and the beautiful Strelitzia reginae Mandela’s Gold, named in 1996. Some unusual offerings include a landfill site in Georgetown, Guyana, an apartment block in the long-running British television sitcom Only Fools and Horses, called Nelson Mandela House, and a fundamental nuclear particle discovered at Leeds University in 1973 and named the Mandela Particle. Then there is the nudibranch, or sea slug, Mandelia Micocornata, named in 1999. However, this gesture was eclipsed by the naming of an entire family and genus of sea slugs after him – family Mandeliidae, genus Mandelia. Poems, stamps, aircraft, racehorses, trees, gold coins and medallions named after him or bearing his likeness – there is seemingly no end to the respectful tributes bestowed on this symbol of reconciliation and forgiveness. MusicDNA Wants to Compete With Apple’s iTunes LP Format – But Will Anybody Care?

first_imgRelated Posts A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… frederic lardinois For the most part, digital music has killed the liner notes that used to come with CDs. Now, MusicDNA, a new file format that looks a lot like Apple’s iTunes LP format, wants to bring liner notes to the 21st century. MusicDNA is a new rich-media extension for digital music files that enriches songs and albums with additional data like lyrics, videos, RSS and Twitter feeds, as well as up to 14 additional pieces of metadata like mood and tempo. Artists and record labels will be able to ship up to 32GB of data with these files. MusicDNA is the creation of Dagfinn Bach’s Bach Technologies. Bach worked on building one of the first MP3 players in 1993. One of the most prominent backers of MusicDNA is Karlheinz Brandenburg, one of the co-inventors of the MP3 format. The company plans to ship its software in the spring. Just a Wrapper It’s important to note that MusicDNA doesn’t propose a new format for encoding the music itself. Instead, MusicDNA is simply an XML-wrapper for music files. In theory, this should make it easier for music labels and artists to adopt this new format as the actual music file will be compatible with virtually every MP3 player on the market. These devices will just play the MP3 track and ignore the rest of the data. To get access to the additional information, though, you currently have to use MusicDNA’s own player. The company plans to release plugins for iTunes and Windows Media Player later this year. Is MusicDNA Doomed? We have to wonder, though, if anybody is really interested in yet another proprietary file format for distributing music. While the iTunesLP format hasn’t exactly caught fire yet (though the mythical Apple tablet could change that), Apple isn’t likely to license this technology from Bach. It’s also important to note that Sony, Warner, Universal and EMI have developed their own file format for bundling music files with additional content. At this point, it seems rather unlikely that MusicDNA will be a major success. While the developers claim to have 10 partners on board for the launch, none of these are major labels. Unless MusicDNA can get the major labels to give up their own format and to drop support for iTunes and the iTunesLP format, this venture isn’t very likely to succeed. 25526 killed in road accidents in 10 years Quader

first_imgObaidul Quader. Prothom Alo File photoRoad transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday told Parliament that 25,526 people were killed and 19,763 others injured in road accidents in the country in the last 10 years, reports UNB.He came up with the statistics while responding to a question from BNP MP Harunur Rashid.”A total of 25,526 people were killed and 19,763 others injured in road accidents between January 2009 and April 2019,” the minister said. He, however, said his ministry is not the organisation concerned to keep the record of cases filed over road accidents. As per the statistics, 2,500 people were killed on an average every year in road accidents. In reply to a separate question from the BNP MP, Quader said police, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and Accident Research Institute of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) are keeping record of road accidents and casualties in the prescribed forms. He said a road accident usually takes place for lack of awareness of road users, including pedestrians.Lack of drivers’ skills, tendency to violate law, lack of proper enforcement of laws, technical glitches, over speed, overtaking and overload of vehicles are also among the main reasons behind road accidents.last_img read more

Amazon Abandons Plans for New York Headquarters

The company had planned to split its second headquarters, dubbed “HQ2,” between New York and Northern Virginia. On Thursday, Amazon said it wouldn’t be looking for an alternative location for the now-abandoned New York campus.“After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens,” the company said in a statement. “We do not intend to reopen the HQ2 search at this time. We will proceed as planned in Northern Virginia and Nashville, and we will continue to hire and grow across our 17 corporate offices and tech hubs in the U.S. and Canada.”Amazon had faced scrutiny for receiving over $3 billion in tax and other incentives, and was heavily courted by state officials while it went through a public application process for its HQ2 location. At one point, New York governor Andrew Cuomo even suggested that he would change his name to “Amazon Cuomo” to win the company’s contract. However, the deal was opposed by a number of local politicians, as well as high-profile progressive Democrats including representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who celebrated the company’s decision with a tweet: On Thursday, Amazon blamed officials for torpedoing its plans. “While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City,” the company said in its statement.Amazon also said that it wasn’t going to give up on New York altogether: “There are currently over 5,000 Amazon employees in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island, and we plan to continue growing these teams.”Amazon’s primary headquarters has been in Seattle ever since the company was founded in 1994. The company had called for a public application process to build its second headquarter, and got over 200 cities to participate, with many offering lucrative tax incentives to attract the e-commerce giant. The company announced a decision to split HQ2 between Northern Virginia and New York in November, and at the time suggested that it would create as many as 25,000 jobs in each location.Jimmy Van Bramer, the New York City Council member who represents the area in Queens, was among the loudest voices opposing the headquarters deal, on the grounds that the state should not be handing tax breaks to one of the world’s largest corporations.Like Ocasio-Cortez, Van Bramer also raised concerns about Amazon’s track record in dealing with unions and in what they perceived to be a lack of hard commitments from Amazon to invest in infrastructure and services in Long Island City and environs. And they faulted Cuomo for negotiating the deal in secret without input from Queens legislators.“Defeating an unprecedented act of corporate welfare is a triumph that should change the way we do economic development deals in our city & state forever,” Van Bramer wrote on Twitter after Amazon announced its decision.
