MILAN, Italy (Reuters) – Serie A club Lazio have been fined 20 000 euros (£16,975.57) after their fans were found to have racially insulted Brescia forward Mario Balotelli during Sunday’s match in the latest incident of racism which has plagued Italian football.Serie A’s disciplinary tribunal said in a statement that further investigations were taking place to identify exactly where among the visiting Lazio fans the chanting came from and that Lazio had been asked to help the police identify those responsible.Lazio won 2-1 after Balotelli, who has been subjected to discrimination throughout his career, had opened the scoring for hosts Brescia. The Serie A statement said that fans “sang a chorus of racial discrimination against a player of the opposing team in the 21st and 29th minutes of the first half” as well as other insults. It said the referee interrupted the match after half an hour and an announcement was made asking for the chanting to stop.Balotelli, who was seen complaining to the referee about the chanting during the match, said “shame on you” in an Instagram message to the Lazio fans after the game. Lazio disassociated itself from the fans abusing Balotelli. The tribunal also handed a two-match suspension to Sassuolo substitute Domenico Berardi after he was sent off at the end of his team’s controversial 2-1 defeat at Genoa. Sassuolo complained that the move which led to Genoa’s winning goal began with a foul on Berardi. The tribunal said that Berardi “vehemently confronted an assistant, addressing severely disrespectful expressions to the match officials” in the tunnel after the match.SPAL were fined 10 000 euros after some fruit peel was thrown from the crowd and “hit the referee without causing any injury” during their match at home to Verona.
:10 Please… stop worrying. If you think the NFL owners and players are going to stop playing football with a $10 billion plus profit, you’re as crazy as Charlie Sheen.:09 Speaking of Charlie Sheen, you tell me what Black actor would be allowed to get away with the things he’s done. NOBODY THAT’S WHO!! BILL NEAL :08 Hines Ward on “Dancing with the Stars.” I am okay with it, but I can’t see him winning. Look for Sugar Ray Leonard to take the trophy. He’s serious about winning. In this July 4, 2014, photo, Brazil’s Neymar screams out after being fouled during the World Cup quarterfinal soccer match between Brazil and Colombia at the Arena Castelao in Fortaleza, Brazil, Friday. The 22-year-old Neymar broke his third vertebra after being kneed in the back by Colombian player Juan Camillo Zuniga in the 86th minute of the match. (AP Photo/Manu Fernandez)BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil (AP) — Neymar and the Brazilian football confederation denied media reports that the striker could undergo special treatment on his fractured vertebra to try to play in the World Cup final if the tournament hosts make it that far.Neymar and the confederation released statements late Sunday saying that nothing that could risk the player’s health or career would be attempted to allow him to try to play if Brazil beats Germany in Tuesday’s semifinals. The statements came after the Brazilian media quoted doctors from the Brazilian club Santos, Neymar’s former team, as saying there was a chance the striker could return for Sunday’s final with alternative treatments and painkiller injections. The 22-year-old Barcelona star was ruled out of the rest of the World Cup after being kneed in the back late in Brazil’s 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Colombia.Tests conducted at a hospital shortly after Friday’s match showed a fracture in his third vertebra. The confederation said in its statement that the “the prognosis is excellent” for Neymar, but only if the injury is given the proper amount of time to heal.“Rushed measures put in risk his future life as an athlete,” the statement said.Brazil team doctor Jose Luiz Runco said Neymar is expected to be sidelined for about 45 days. He has returned home from the team’s training camp to recover.“Let’s not create an illusion to the Brazilian people,” Runco told Globo TV. “There isn’t the smallest possibility for Neymar to play on July 13 if Brazil reaches the final.”Neymar’s staff said in his statement that he remains solely under the care of the Brazilian confederation’s doctors until the end of the World Cup. It said the visit by Santos’ doctors was a “cordiality.”While the statement never directly dismissed the possibility he could play in the final, it said that “no alternative treatment was discussed.”“If Neymar becomes fit to play a professional football match before initially expected, it will be because of the positive progress of his condition through the treatment currently being administered,” the statement said.___Follow Tales Azzoni at http://www.twitter.com/tazzoni
Aston Villa boss Smith reveals face-to-face Abraham talks about Wolvesby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveAston Villa boss Dean Smith has urged Tammy Abraham to stay and fire them into the Premier League.Smith talked face-to-face with the 21-year-old on-loan Chelsea striker to find out if he was still keen on a temporary switch to Wolves.“Monday was an agreed day off for Tammy,” said Smith. “He came back in on Tuesday. I spoke to him then about his attitude, and it’s been spot-on since then.”He’s been happy here. I asked if he was looking to go elsewhere and he reiterated he was happy to be at Villa , was enjoying playing here and enjoying scoring goals — and nothing more was really said to him. I’ve said right from the outset I couldn’t see him going anywhere, and I’d have been amazed if he had.“The way I look at it, he’s scored 23 goals in this league before with Bristol City. He’s got 16 now. He’s got 20 games to go, if he scores another ten he’s never playing in the Championship again. He’s a Premier League player who’s here, playing in the Championship with us. We’re hoping he can score the goals to take us to the Premier League.”On the prospect of Wolves taking Abraham on-loan, Smith added: “I don’t believe a recall to send him on loan again would have made sense. He’s been on loan three times already. He’s enjoying his football here and long may that continue.“I think everyone knew there was a release clause if Chelsea wanted to pull him back. But my understanding is that if they had activated it it would be for him to play for them, because they had no intention of selling him.“His state of mind is fine. This has been going on for two or three weeks now and he’s scored goals in that time.” TagsTransfersAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say
TORONTO – WestJet says it is reviewing its baggage policy after a customer complained that it discriminated against travellers from certain countries. The airline currently has a policy that prevents travellers to Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago from checking in more than two bags, unless the extra luggage is “a golf bag containing golf clubs.”Jared Walker tweeted about the policy after his 62-year-old mother was prevented from bringing an oversized bag on a trip to Jamaica to attend a funeral.Walker, 30, said the policy is “absurd” and shows preferential treatment to tourists, as opposed to travellers returning to their country of origin.WestJet told The Canadian Press in a statement that the baggage policy was in place for Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago “due to the amount of excess checked baggage brought by guests travelling to these particular destinations.”The company said it’s reviewing the aspect of the baggage policy related to golf bags, recognizing “the optics are poor.”It further said that travellers who want to bring more than two bags to Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago can do so through WestJet Cargo, its air shipping service. The airline said it apologized to Walker and reached out to him in an attempt to resolve the issue. “It was never our intention to be discriminatory in this specific baggage policy,” said Lauren Stewart, a spokeswoman for WestJet.Walker said he received an apology and other messages from the company Wednesday afternoon but it was too late to help his mother, who was already in Jamaica. He said he booked tickets for his mother, Nellrene Walker, so she could attend her sister’s funeral in Jamaica. After paying for the tickets, he saw WestJet’s baggage policy, and called customer service, he said.“They let me know that no exceptions were allowed,” said Jared Walker, who wanted to pay for his mother to bring a third oversized bag.“It seems really ridiculous that this policy…only applies to two countries which happens to be tourist destinations, and that there’s a golf club exemption.”In immigrant communities, it’s common to take goods back to their country of origin, especially when a family member has died, he said. His mother is originally from Jamaica, and Walker was born in the United States after she moved to Florida. They both came to Canada in 1995.He said when he originally asked why golf clubs are allowed, WestJet told him it was due to “weight distribution” and “baggage trends”.Walker tweeted about the policy Tuesday night and said he received a message from the company around 1 a.m. saying it would allow his mother to pay to take the oversized bag.But he said he saw the messages too late, and his mother flew out Wednesday morning.
LISBON, Portugal — Portugal is embracing China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative, which offers loans for the building of large-scale infrastructure projects.Despite wariness in other European Union capitals about Beijing’s strategy, the Portuguese government has wholeheartedly endorsed the scheme during a 24-hour state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two countries signed Wednesday a memorandum of understanding on co-operation within China’s modern Silk Road initiative, with special emphasis on transport connections and energy.Xi described Portugal as “an important hub in the land and maritime silk routes.”The Portuguese government wants China to help develop Portugal’s biggest Atlantic port and expand national energy company Energias de Portugal overseas, among other things. The two countries signed 17 co-operation agreements. They included deals on joint technological research in the energy and communications sectors. The Associated Press

An impressive UCL campaign has seen Barcelona end their quarter-final curse (2016-2018) and reach the 8th semi-final in the last 12 years. As the only European giant standing in the elite competition, Barcelona is pipped as favourites to lift the trophy for the 6th time. Subduing Inter and Spurs in the group stage and Lyon in last 16, Barça were matched against Manchester United in a rematch of the two UCL finals (2009, 2011). And, similar to those finals, Barcelona triumphed owing to the brilliance of their talisman Lionel Messi who is in dazzling form leading the scoring charts with ten goals. Barcelona’s balanced performance in attack, midfield, defence as well as a calm and cautious goalkeeper means it would be an apt test of Liverpool’s overly attacking gameplay. They have conceded less and Camp Nou’s effectively a fortress with Barça unbeaten in Europe since 2013. Drawn against second favourites Liverpool means this semi-final will be a goal fest given the firepower both sides possess. Barça possesses the flair, experience, and vision to make it to Madrid but will have to be careful given the scintillating form the Reds are in. Also Read – Puducherry on top after 8-wkt win over Chandigarh Gameplay: Possession, high-press and pace on the break remain Barça’s dominant traits. Their mesmerising momentum shift, sharp passing, crisp one-twos, delicate through-balls and devastating long balls are capable of unlocking any defence. Key Players: Lionel Messi and Luis SuárezMemories of the final defeat last season to Real Madrid must have brought a horde of realisations and ensuing improvisations – strengthening defence for starters. Liverpool possesses the deadliest attacking trio right now with the possibility of goals coming from any direction. Klopp’s two years at the helm have created a team that does not sit back waiting for a chance on the break but instead looks forward to orchestrating the game, with reinvigorated counter-attacks and a better conversion rate of attempts to the goal. Liverpool came out of group stage courtesy of more goals after being tied on points and head-to-head with Napoli. Removing Bayern Munich in a sensational away match performance in last 16, Liverpool’s quarter-final clash against Porto was a cake walk (Agg. 6-1). Making it to a consecutive semi-final, the Reds’ bolstered defence and ultra-high pressing will certainly cause problems for the Spanish giants. Pursuing a neck-to-neck league title race against City, Liverpool will have to tactically rotate the squad in order to produce the sublime performance they have, so far or they could jeopardise chances of silverware in both competitions. Also Read – Vijender’s next fight on Nov 22, opponent to be announced later Gameplay: Strong defence, explosive pressing and the in-form attacking trio provide balance to the team. A serious counter-attacking threat, Liverpool can unleash Mane and Salah through long balls creating certain goal opportunities. Key Players: Virgil van Dijk and Mo SalahHaving brushed aside league rivals Manchester City in a high-octane match, Spurs has already made history. Their first semi-final berth in 57 years of Europe’s elite competition was achieved in a dramatic fashion trumping the citizens who were favourites to win and advancing on away goals. A seven-goal thriller with a meandering scoreboard kept everyone at the edge of their seats till the final whistle as City failed to overturn the aggregate deficit despite winning 4-3 on the night. Spurs are accredited with an admirable fighting spirit which has brought them from being almost out of the group stage to a maiden UCL semi-final appearance. The 1-0 home victory against Inter and late Lucas Moura goal at Camp Nou on the last matchday facilitated their progress from the group stage based on a better head-to-head record against Inter. In the round of 16, they edged past an in-form Dortmund with a comfortable 4-0 aggregate score. Spurs’ all-out attack might just leave them vulnerable to Ajax’s sustained gameplay and it would be better if they balance their efforts while not letting Ajax get an away goal. Gameplay: Spurs maintain an average possession while stressing on counter attacks to surprise opponents owing to their great speed on the break. Pochettino’s ‘attack is the best defence’ strategy fits their narrative. Key players: Son Heung-Min and C EriksonWith an exhilarating performance at Turin to reach the semi-finals after 20 years, Ajax has demonstrated that efficient team dynamics can outclass big fishes owing to one simple fact: Football is a team game. Smooth passing, neat one-twos, flexible yet maintained team positioning and balanced attack and defence have all accounted for Ajax’s dream run in the UCL this season. Having not lost a single game back in the group stage, Ajax has since taken on European heavyweights one after another and produced beautiful football. Drawing both matches against Bayern, defeating Real Madrid in Bernabéu (1-4) and usurping favourites Juventus to book a place in the semi-finals, a team of youngsters has left the world in awe of its resilience and skill. Led by 19-year-old Matthijs de Ligt, this Ajax side has suddenly stimulated the global audience with its vibrant and young squad outplaying the veterans of UCL. For Ajax, style is not an alternative to substance but a route to it and through its unwavering faith and high-performance tempo, they have axed their way through to the top four. In a match of comparative underdogs, Ajax might just trump Spurs owing to their majestic form this season. Gameplay: Displaying total football in all its glory, Ajax’s philosophy of high-pressing, more possession and controlled tempo fits their explosive energy. Key Players: Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt
TRIPOLI – Fresh clashes erupted Tuesday in the southern Libyan city of Sebha pitting supporters of slain dictator Moamer Kadhafi against government forces and former rebels, a military source said. The latest fighting was sparked by the arrival of government reinforcements who aim to dislodge the Kadhafi supporters from several positions they occupy in and around the desert city, said Al-Ferjani Akila, of the Sebha Operations Centre. There was no immediate word on casualties. “Clashes are taking place between the army and former rebels from Misrata on one side and supporters of the old regime on the other,” he said. The coastal city of Misrata saw some of the bloodiest combat of the eight-month uprising that toppled Kadhafi, who was captured and killed by rebels in October 2011.At least 88 people have been killed and 130 wounded over the past two weeks in fighting between rival tribes in Sebha. The fighting initially pitted the Arab Awled Sleiman tribe against members of the Toubou, a non-Arab ethnic group that has long complained of being marginalised by Tripoli. The Awled Sleiman have also clashed with other Arab tribes.Kadhafi loyalists have taken advantage of the chaos to launch repeated attacks on the city’s Tamenhant air base, according to local officials.
When the Scarlet and Gray teams face off in the Spring Game Saturday, the passing and blocking advantages give the Scarlet Team the edge for securing victory. The coaching staff was divided into Scarlet and Gray teams, which in turn drafted rosters to play against each other Saturday. Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tom Herman will lead Scarlet along with assistant coaches Everett Withers, Mike Vrabel, and Tim Hinton. Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell will coach Gray, with Kerry Coombs, Ed Warinner, Stan Drayton and Zach Smith assisting him.Braxton Miller, the rising sophomore starting quarterback of the Buckeyes, was drafted to the Scarlet roster. The quarterbacks for the Gray roster will be rising redshirt junior Kenny Guiton and incoming freshman Cardale Jones. As a true freshman, Miller showed his ability to be a dynamic dual-threat quarterback. While Miller had his ups and downs last season, this will be his first opportunity to take the field and show his progression with Herman leading the offense.Guiton had a strong Spring Game performance last season, completing 11 of 21 pass attempts for 167 yards and two touchdowns. That said, he is not the true playmaker that Miller is, and having him gives Scarlet a big advantage in the game.Additionally, the Scarlet team has a much more experienced offensive line. Four of this year’s five expected starters – rising redshirt junior Jack Mewhort, rising redshirt junior Corey Linsley, rising senior Reid Fragel and rising redshirt junior Marcus Hall – are on the Scarlet roster. The Gray roster includes rising junior guard Andrew Norwell, a returning starter from last season, but rising sophomore Antonio Underwood is the only other offensive lineman on their roster with any playing experience.Gray has an edge at the offensive skill positions. The top five returning receivers from last season – rising sophomore wide receiver Devin Smith, rising redshirt senior tight end Jake Stoneburner, rising junior wide receiver Corey Brown, rising redshirt sophomore wide receiver Verlon Reed, and rising senior running back Jordan Hall – are all on the Gray roster. That said, their success as receivers will rely upon Guiton’s ability to pass the ball, and Miller is the much more talented passer. Rising junior running back Carlos Hyde and redshirt junior Chris Fields highlight the skill position talent on the Scarlet roster.Scarlet is also loaded with much of OSU’s top defensive talent. The roster is led by rising junior defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, a massive, athletic defensive tackle who emerged as a star last season with 10 tackles for loss. Their roster also features possibly the most talented linebacker on the roster, rising sophomore Ryan Shazier, who played tremendously when he earned time in the starting lineup late last season. The Scarlet roster also features three of last year’s four starters from the secondary: rising redshirt junior safety C.J. Barnett, junior safety Christian Bryant and rising senior cornerback Travis Howard.Rising senior defensive end John Simon, who was a third-team AP All-American last season, will lead the Gray defense up front. Rising redshirt junior Adam Bellamy and rising redshirt senior Garrett Goebel are returning starters on the Gray defensive line, and the wild card for them up front could be senior Nathan Williams, a talented pass-rusher who missed the entire 2011 season with injury. However, while Gray might have an edge in comparing defensive lines, Scarlet has the edge among linebackers and defensive backs. The Gray roster only has two returning starters among the defensive back seven: rising redshirt senior linebacker Etienne Sabino and rising redshirt sophomore Bradley Roby.Additionally, the Scarlet roster will have a clear edge in kicking field goals with rising junior Drew Basil. Rising senior punter Ben Buchanan will give Gray an edge in the field position battle, but Miller showed last season that he has the ability to drive the team to points from poor field position. As OSU is still learning the offense, I expect their defensive talent to have the better success in this game. That said, I expect Miller to lead the Scarlet offense to more breakthroughs, and therefore a Spring Game victory.Score Prediction: Scarlet 20, Gray 14
