The newcomers…There are a few newcomers in the lineup which gives this team hope. Skylar Brand is hardly a newcomer to wrestling, but he is a newcomer to Wellington High School wrestling. After sustaining two knee injuries in middle school and his freshman year, Brand elected to not go out his sophomore and junior year. But he returns with a vengeance in his senior year. Look for him to be a solid starter at 220 pounds.Ian Groom, a freshman, has also caught the eye of his coaches. He will be wrestling at 182. Concordia, Close Forgot password? So who will anchor this team in the early going?…Joey HaydonOf the three returning starters currently on the mat, senior Joey Haydon at 160 pounds, has the most wins. He is 20-17 and was very close to qualifying in early 2014. Aaron Fair, who lost going to state in the most heart-breaking of fashions at the Winfield regional, will return in full force as a 182 pounder. Graysen DeJarnett is a returning starter with great upside potential. The junior was 14-10 in 2013-14 and is expected to wrestle at 138 pounds although he will start the season at 145 pounds.Aaron Fair Goddard, Maize South, 9. The schedule…The schedule appears to be identical to the one last year. The Kansas State High School Activities Association reported this week that Wellington will be traveling to Pratt High School on Feb. 20-21 for the Class 4A Regional. Those teams will include: Andale, Augusta, Clearwater, El Dorado, Holcomb, Hugoton, Larned, Mulvane, Pratt, Rose Hill, Towanda-Circle, Ulysses, Wellington, Wichita-Trinity Academy, and Winfield.Andale will, of course, be tough, but it is the only team ranked in the preseason poll. So this regional is doable. The full schedule for the WHS varsity and junior varsity team is as follows: Invitational9 a.m.Away vs. Valley CenterValley Center High School 4A Regional11 a.m.Away vs. TbaTBA Winfield, Concordia, Tunnell, Ethan11145.6138 lbs. Where we left off… The WHS wrestling program had its biggest year since the Russ Decker era in post season competition in February with five Crusader grapplers making it to the Class 4A State Tournament in Salina. Two of those wrestlers: Andrew Pelkey at 145 and Taylan Lamkin at 195 became state placers. And what happened between then and now?2014-15 Wellington High School wrestling squad.Well, four graduated (the outrage) and the fifth tore his ACL in his knee during the football season (more on that later). So this season Wellington has no returning state qualifiers as of this weekend when they travel to El Dorado for an eight-team dual. The competition…Wellington was denied an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV title because of Augusta the past two seasons. But the Orioles have been moved to Div. III and Mulvane has taken its place.Andale, like every other sport, appears to be the kingpin of the division this season. Yes, Wellington has beaten Andale in dual competition the past two years, but the Indians are said to be a lot more loaded this year. Mulvane will be tough. In the KWCA preseason rankings, Andale is ranked No. 7. Tournament11 a.m.Away vs. Andale,Rose Hill High School 10. The roster…The roster for the WHS wrestling team as released by the school is as follow:2014-15 WELLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING ROSTER – 12-4-14 Hutchinson, Independence, Andover Central, Mulvane, Wichita Trinity Academy Caney Valley, Wichita-North, Tuesday, Jan 27, 2015 Maize South, Saturday, Jan 24, 2015 Rose Hill, El Dorado, Fort Scott, Mulvane, Thursday, Jan 15, 2015 2. So what does this mean?… In wrestling, a lot of times it is not so much who left the program last season as it is who “could be†on the mat this season. Mitch McComb, embarking on his third season as the head WHS wrestling coach, has or had 35 wrestlers out according to the roster. Some have come, some have gone and a couple of newcomers have the potential of being very, very good. Then there are those walking the Wellington hallways who are sharpening their Playstation 4 skills. Rose Hill, McBath, Brad10185.6182 lbs. Wichita-Northwest, 3. Who is back?Wellington has five returning starters: Brad Wiens, Graysen DeJarnett, Andrew Pelkey, Joey Haydon and Aaron Fair. Two of those wrestlers are currently out. McComb said Wiens, a promising 126-pound junior, may be out for the season with a shoulder injury. He had a nice run in the 4A Regional before falling short as a state qualifier… Smith, Gabe9207.2195 lbs. Fox, Gunner9122.8113 lbs. 4… And then there is Pelkey…Andrew PelkeyAll eyes are on Pelkey, the gifted senior who placed fifth last year at the state tournament in Salina at 145 pounds. He is Wellington’s only ranked wrestler in the preseason Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll — ranked No. 3 at 152 pounds (see preseason KWCA rankings here.) But unless you have been living under a rock or in Mulvane, Pelkey tore his ACL during the first football game and is still convalescing. McComb said at Crusader Club Monday that he could be returning in January – which seems to be a quick turnaround.“I don’t want to rush him,†McComb said. “He is going to have to wear a brace. This will be a touchy situation.†Bodkins, Zach12163.1152 lbs. Filling out the roster… Wellington’s biggest weakness will be in the lower ranks… again. McComb said the 106 and 113 pound weight classes will be open. He is counting on freshman Daniel Schmidt to fill the void eventually. But for the time being McComb said he is going to wrestle him at the junior varsity level. At 120 pounds, a foreign exchange student named Ahmad Mohammed will be representing Wellington. McComb said he has never wrestled before until this year.Chevy Nuss will wrestled at 126 as a sophomore and look for Adrian Wiseman (not on the roster) to wrestle at 138. Ian King a senior is expected to wrestle at 138 with DeJarnett at 145. Once Pelkey is infused into the lineup at either 152 or 145 then this lineup will be significantly shuffled.“One of my varsity starter now won’t be starting in January,†McComb said.At 170, Vincent Ast is starting.“Vincent is actually smaller than Joey, but I need Joey at 160,†McComb said.At heavyweight, freshman Matt McComb appears to have the nod.“At one point I thought I had seven heavyweights, but I’m now down to two due to injuries or kids not going out,†McComb said. Guardiola fears City title collapseManchester, United Kingdom | AFP | Manager Pep Guardiola has made the extraordinary suggestion that runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City could suffer a stunning collapse — even though they could be confirmed as champions this weekend if results go their way.City are 13 points clear at the top with six matches to play and could finish the weekend with their third title in seven seasons. They will take the Premier League crown if they beat Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday and second-placed Manchester United lose against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, although Albion increasingly look condemned to relegation. However, Guardiola’s side are seeking to recover from three dispiriting defeats in a row, having gone out of the Champions League after losing home and away against Liverpool in the quarter-finals, and sandwiched in between they missed the opportunity to clinch the title when United pulled off a 3-2 win last weekend.City were two up in the Manchester derby before Paul Pogba inspired a United comeback, scoring twice in the second half.Guardiola is concerned about the psychological effect of those three losses on his players as they look to secure the trophy, and warned they could still falter.“Of course it can happen, I assure you,” said Guardiola. Guardiola cited two examples of high-profile sporting collapses when examining his own team’s prospects -– Real Madrid’s miserable finish to the 2003-04 La Liga season, and Golden State Warriors’ failure to win the NBA finals in 2016. The Warriors lost 4-3 to the Cleveland Cavaliers despite leading 3-1 with three matches to play, while Madrid managed to finish fourth in La Liga 14 years ago, having held an eight-point lead at the top with 12 matches to play.“Real Madrid, years ago, lost five games in a row and didn’t win the league. So of course it can happen, no doubts about that,” Guardiola said.“The players know that. It’s not necessary to say that to them. Of course it can happen –- in football, in sports.“Two years ago, never before, in the NBA finals one team recovered from 3-1 down. Cavaliers won against Golden State Warriors 4-3. They won three games in a row.”Share on: WhatsApp Pages: 1 2
