The event took place on Monday and Tuesday of this week, and was played in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Barry University was the team champion with a score of 886, while the Argos were very close behind with a score of 891. Nova Southeastern (the host school) and Valdosta State were tied for Second in the very competitive tournament with a score of 887.The Argos were in first place with a 290 score after round one, with Barry and Nova Southeastern one stroke back at 291. Barry University took the lead after an outstanding second round, as the Argos were tied for 3rd place six strokes back, at the end of round two. Valdosta State had the best team score during the third round to sneak ahead of UWF. The playing conditions were tough as the wind was blowing strongly, especially on Tuesday. The course is a challenging one, even without the wind, so scores within two or three above par were considered outstanding.Coach Steve Fell was somewhat pleased, “We played alright, certainly not terrible, and we had a chance at winning. This tournament showed the value of each shot, as one shot here or there could have made a very big difference.” Just five strokes separated the top four teams. Barry University is the defending National Champion, while Nova SE, Valdosta State, and the Argos, are all top ranked schools.Individually, West Florida had three players finish in the top 10. Matthew Galloway (Sr. / Valrico, Fla.) finished 7th individually with a five over par 221, while Tobias Rosendahl (Fr. / Sweden) and Kyle Scott (Fr. / South Africa) were six over par with a 222, to tie for 8th place. Rosendahl was in second place at -1 after the first round. Coach Fell was pleased with his young players, “One of the bright spots this fall, was the play of our freshmen (Rosendahl and Scott). They had really solid fall tournaments.”Brent Witcher of Valdosta State was the overall winner with a three under par 213. Witcher also had the best round (69) during the second round, while his teammate Jason Flowers had the tournaments best round of 68 on Tuesday. The Argos Kevin Cooper (Fr. / Tallahassee, Fla.) finished with a 226 score, which was good for 19th place, while Federico Damus (Sr. / Argentina) tied for 26th place with a score of 230. There were 75 golfers in the event, which included several top 25 schools in Division I.The tournament concluded the fall schedule for UWF. Coach Fell was pleased overall, “where we are right now is fine, but we have some work to do. We know we can be very good this spring, and we hope to peak at the right time.” Until then, the Argos will hit the weight room and stay conditioned. As Coach Fell explained, “To play 36 holes in one day, you need to be physically and mentally strong. This is an endurance sport, and it can be an advantage to be physically fit, because it can help the mental approach throughout the match.” Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
