Women’s Soccer to Host Missouri State Thursday in Regular Season Finale

first_imgStory Links Drake had comeback road victories over UNI and Indiana State last week. The Bulldogs overcame a 1-0 first-half deficit to the Panthers for a 2-1 victory and a late 2-0 deficit to the Sycamores, scoring three unanswered goals to keep their MVC title hopes alive with a 3-2 victory. DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University women’s soccer team hosts Missouri State Thursday at 4 p.m. in the regular season finale. The Missouri Valley Conference match at Cownie Soccer Complex will be broadcast on ESPN3. Live Stats Drake (7-8-1, 4-1-1 MVC) can repeat as MVC Regular Season champions with a win over Missouri State (8-7-2, 2-2-2 MVC), and first-place Loyola (8-6-1, 5-1-0 MVC) loses to Evansville Thursday. If Drake wins and Loyola ties Evansville the two teams will share the title. Drake is guaranteed a top-three seed in the MVC Championship that starts Oct. 28 as the team currently sits in second place in front of third-place Illinois State (9-7-2, 4-2-0 MVC), which ends the season Thursday against fourth-place UNI (8-7-2, 3-3-0 MVC). A Bulldogs’ victory over Missouri State assures the team of a top-two seed while a Redbirds’ loss to UNI does the same. If Missouri State and Drake tie and Illinois State and UNI tie, the Bulldogs would be the second seed, based off their win over the Redbirds on Sept. 29. A top two seed earns a bye into the MVC Semifinals, Nov. 2, in Chicago, Ill., hosted by Loyola. If the Bulldogs are the third seed they will host the sixth-seed Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.center_img  Print Friendly Version Against Indiana State, freshman Libby Helverson (West Des Moines, Iowa) was the hero scoring a golden goal in the 95th minute. It came after junior Shelley Lyjak’s (Bartlett, Ill.) took a shot and the Sycamores’ goalkeeper, Hannah Sullivan, was unable to hold onto the ball. Helverson was in the right spot as she tapped it in for the winner for the Bulldogs. For her performance, she was named the MVC Newcomer of the Week. Senior Shannon Steurer’s (Ballwin, Mo.) first career goal as a Bulldog evened the score at 2-2. Sophomore Olivia Bruce (Lakeville, Minn.) netted her team-leading fourth goal of the year with the team’s first goal in the comeback. In the win over UNI, senior Alyssa Brand (Skokie, Ill.), who missed most the season due to injury, scored her first goal of the season in the 75th minute. Brand added an assist.  ESPN3 last_img read more
