The hosts and overwhelming favourites’ first warm-up match against Australia on Saturday got off to a horror-start as pacers Mark Wood and Jofra Archer suffered injury scares.England were short of personnel so much so that their assistant coach and 42-year-old former cricketer Paul Collingwood was forced to take the field. Collingwood, their fielding coach, wore Mark Wood’s shirt and came on as a substitute fielder for the side, led by Jos Buttler.Mark Wood walked off the field after suffering what was seemingly a hamstring injury in his fourth over at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. Wood did not take any chances as he quickly left the field.Wood was replaced by Jofra Archer, who was rested for the first warm-up match. However, Archer, who was included in the England squad in the eleventh hour, walked off the field after seemingly injuring himself while fielding at the deep.Joe Root, who was given rest for Saturday’s warm-up match, was called onto the field.Notably, England had already lost Eoin Morgan to a finger injury. The skipper suffered the injury during a training session on the eve of their warm-up match against Australia. He has been ruled out of the warm-up fixtures but will be available to take the field for their World Cup 2019 opener against South Africa on May 30.With Adil Rashid, the leg-spinner, also missing out due to a shoulder issue, England were forced to bring Paul Collingwood onto the field.advertisementCollingwood hadn’t played international cricket for England since 2011. He retired from competitive cricket in 2018. Collingwood played 68 Tests, 197 ODIs and 36 T20Is for England and was rated one of the best fielders during his heyday.Despite losing key players to injuries, England have managed to keep Australia’s scoring rate under the check.
